He tried several combinations over the years, mixing the rubber with everything from a talc-like powder to nitric acid, and all the while he and his family suffered from a lack of money and food. When he finally hit rock bottom, he made the happy accident of applying heat to a sulfur-mixed rubber, which gave him the texture he craved. But even with this major breakthrough, which led to the vulcanization process, he spent the remainder of his life fighting infringements and ended up $200,000 in debt at the time of his death.
